The New Forest cicada (Cicadetta montana s. str.) is recognized as the sole native cicada species to inhabit the UK. From May to July, it emits a distinctive high-pitched song that often eludes the auditory perception of most adults, being situated near the threshold of human hearing. Documentation of cicada sightings in the New Forest area traces back to as early as 1812, with the latest unverified sighting reported in 2000. Despite this, there is a notable possibility that colonies of these insects persist undiscovered in less frequented regions of the forest. In order to facilitate a broader engagement in the search, the New Forest Cicada Project has introduced a specialized application capable of detecting and identifying the characteristic song of this elusive species.
